Every year the National Association of Home Builder’s hosts their annual convention, the International Builder’s Show. The show usually rotates between Las Vegas and Orlando. This year the show was in Orlando. Being in Orlando was a great excuse to visit to Disney World, especially since I have a two year old now! Our family hasn’t been to Disney World since my brother was 10 and I was 13, so that was quite a long time ago. My husband couldn’t come along since he is a CPA and the tax crunch has already begun. I told him since he is the treasurer for our local home builders association he should be able to come but he didn’t think that was a good enough excuse. On a snowy Sunday in Oklahoma my Dad and I along with my Mom and daughter headed out for sunny Orlando! We enjoyed a couple days at the Disney Parks before the show began.
The show opened with a wonderful grand opening ceremony including special guest speaker, Peyton Manning. The home building industry is continuing to make a strong rebound nationally with new home sales rising. This year approximately 80,000 professionals attended the show and 1,500 suppliers. The Show was combined with the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show so we enjoyed browsing suppliers from both industries. During our three days at the event we covered over 100,000 square feet of show floor space featuring the latest designs and trends in the industry. Gray and white are the most popular color choices with lots of clean lines. Freestanding tubs are very hot right now with almost all new multi million dollar homes having at least one contemporary freestanding tub. These tubs are the modern take on the classic clawfoot tub. Kitchen designs are showcasing lots of white stones with white cast iron farm sinks being a popular choice. While at the show we also attended numerous education sessions demonstrating the best practices in the industry for building high performance and energy efficient homes.
One afternoon we took the opportunity to tour the New American Home. This 8,245 square foot home displays the latest in design trends, technology and energy efficient construction practices in the industry. The home is built to surround an open air central courtyard. All the main living spaces display large sliding glass walls to create true indoor/outdoor living. The style of the home incorporates lots of clean lines and finishes but still includes some rustic elements like a beautiful reclaimed wood table incorporated into the kitchen island. One design element that I really enjoyed was the grouping of several pendant lights instead of a big chandelier. This created a unique yet grand feel in some of the larger spaces of the home.
